what make the love last?

What makes love last? It’s a question I’ve spent a lot of time contemplating. Well there are the cliché answers like: ‘love for the sake of Allah’ lasts. Well of course that’s true, but what does it mean to love for the sake of Allah? One could respect and even admire countless people for their devotion to God; but that doesn’t mean you could be in a relationship with all of them. So what’s the missing ingredient? Trial and error, observation, reflection, and a whole lot of supplication have led me to the following:

*What keeps a person invested in a relationship is *not* what they are *getting* from it—but rather what they are *giving* to it. If you, or the other party, are only receivers in the relationship, know that you (or them) will get bored very very soon.

*A relationship based solely on being filled by the other person will not last.

*A relationship based on dependency will cause you an inordinate amount of pain. Until you transfer your dependency to ALLAH.
