◕ Is Jesus a god because he forgave sins ??

◕ Is Jesus a god because he forgave sins ??

● In the second chapter of Mark, Jesus tells a man, Your sins are forgiven [Mark 2:5-10].

The fact that Jesus forgave sins is perhaps the action of Jesus which is most commonly seen as being synonymous with divinity since it is argued that only God can forgive sins. The customary interpretation takes the side of the Jews then present who ask, Who can forgive sins but God alone?

● first we should notice that "Your sins are forgiven" is just a pronouncement of forgiveness, and the passive form of the verb indicates that it is God who forgives.

● the verse at [John 12:49] among others, explains very well how a man could make such a statement.

"For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it."

In this verse Jesus denies any personal initiative. [see also John 8:40; 14:10].

Christians made the same mistake which the Jews did, who said "Who can forgive sins but God alone?", and they accused Jesus of blasphemy, Christians also said "Who can forgive sins but God alone?", Jesus must be God, and they both are wrong, they did not understand Jesus.

Jesus explains "Is it easier to say to the paralyzed man ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk’? So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!” And the man jumped up, grabbed his mat, and walked out through the stunned on lookers. They were all amazed and praised God, exclaiming, “We’ve never seen anything like this before!” Mark 2:9-11

Jesus was a prophet of God and he was given the authority to do what he wants, but the Jews considered him false Prophet although he did Miracles in front of them, yet they ignored this fact and concentrated on that he said to the man your sins are forgiven.
● This same authority to forgive sins is apparently granted to his disciples: "If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven..." [John 20:23]

but it is never suggested that the disciples are thus divine!

● If Christianity believes that forgiving sins is a sign of divinity then what about the many millions of people in the Christian clergy who over the last 2000 years have publicly accepted people's "confessions" and "forgiven" their sins ?

and a final question for Christians if Jesus was simply able to forgive sins, why he had to die on the Cross ?!!
