what does the son of god mean

Christians believe that Jesus (pbuh) is the begotten son of God because he is called the son of God in the Bible in a couple of places. Also, because the KJV of the Bible says he's the begotten son of God. First off, let's go over a fewbiblical verses:

» Luke 3:38 Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.

» 1 Chronicles 28:6And he (God) said unto me, Solomon thy son, he shall build my house and my courts: for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father.

» Exodus 4:22And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD, Israel is my son, even my firstborn

» Jeremiah 31:9 They shall come with weeping, and with supplications will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters in a straight way, wherein they shall not stumble: for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.

» Psalms 2:7I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me (David), Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

» Deuteronomy 14:1Ye are the children of the LORD your God

» Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

»John 1: 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

» Genesis 6:2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

» See also: Genesis 6:4, Philippians 2:15, Job 38:7, Philippians 2:15, Job 1:6,Job 2:1.

◔ As one can see by the above verses, many are termed the Son of God in the Bible. David is even called the begotten Son of God. But there is more. All the recent translations of the Bible have made changes. Even the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible, which used the oldest manuscripts available, including new discoveries such as Nag Hamadi and others that date further back then the manuscripts used by the KJV. One of the Major changes can be found in the following verse:

» John 3:16 ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. (NRSV)

» John 3:16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,[a] that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (NIV)

»John 3:16"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. (NLT)

◔ The term Son of God was used to describe those that were servants of God. Lower-case or Capital "S" means nothing. The Semitic languages (Arabic, Aramaic, Hebrew) don't use capital and lower-case lettering. This is a non-issue. Here is what Grolier's encyclopedia says under "Jesus Christ":

"During his earthly life Jesus was addressed as rabbi and was regarded as a prophet. Some of his words, too, place him in the category of sage. A title of respect for a rabbi would be "my Lord." Already before Easter his followers, impressed by his authority, would mean something more than usual when they addressed him as "my Lord.".... it is unlikely that the title "Son of David" was ascribed to him or accepted by him during his earthly ministry. "Son of God," in former times a title of the Hebrew kings (Psalms 2:7), was first adopted in the post-Easter church as an equivalent of Messiah and had no metaphysical connotations (Romans 1:4). Jesus was conscious of a unique filial relationship with God, but it is uncertain whether the Father/Son language (Mark 18:32; Matt. 11:25-27 par.; John passim) goes back to Jesus himself" .

◔ Jesus (pbuh) refers to himself as the "son of man" over 50 times in the New Testament. What does this term mean? In the Septuagint, the term ben adam (son of man in Hebrew) is a generic term, meaning "human being". The term "ben adam" appears 109 times in the KJV of the Old Testament. Many times, the term is used to describe humanity in general:
»Numbers 23:19God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

» Psalms 8:4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

» Psalms 146: 3 Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.

»Jeremiah 50:40 As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD; so shall no man abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell therein.

» See also: Job 25:6 and 35:8, Psalms 144:3, Isaiah 51:12 and 56:2, Jeremiah 49:18 and Jeremiah 49:33 and Jeremiah 51:43.

Also, in the book of Ezekiel, the term "son of man" is used as a title. The context is that of a servant. This can be seen in the following verses since God is commanding something from Ezekiel when using the term:
»Ezekiel 2: 1And he said unto me, Son of man, stand upon thy feet, and I will speak unto thee.

»Ezekiel 2:3And he said unto me, Son of man, I send thee to the children of Israel, to a rebellious nation that hath rebelled against me: they and their fathers have transgressed against me, even unto this very day.

» Ezekiel 8: 5Then said he unto me, Son of man, lift up thine eyes now the way toward the north. So I lifted up mine eyes the way toward the north, and behold northward at the gate of the altar this image of jealousy in the entry.

» Ezekiel 12:18 Son of man, eat thy bread with quaking, and drink thy water with trembling and with carefulness;

» Ezekiel 20: 27 Therefore, son of man, speak unto the house of Israel, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Yet in this your fathers have blasphemed me, in that they have committed a trespass against me.

» There are 94 instances that Prophet Ezekiel (pbuh) is addressed as the "son of man" by God in the KJV.

Now try going through the book of Ezekiel, and replace the term "son of man" with the word "Ezekiel". Daniel is also referred to as the "son of man" by the Angel Gabriel in Daniel 8: 15-17 in the KJV.

So to review:

● Jesus (pbuh) is not the only one referred to as the "begotten Son of God" in the Bible.

● The term Begotten has been removed from all newer translations.

● Many people are called "Sons of God" in the Bible.

● The term "son of man" simply means "human" in Hebrew. Many are also called the "son of man" in the Old Testament.

● Jesus(pbuh) constantly referred to himself as the "son of man" to show he was nothing more than a human being.
