Cargill beef packing plant in Ft. Morgan, Colorado just fired nearly 200 Muslim workers — over time spent for praying.
Plant workers complain they were not allowed enough space or sufficient time to pray.
Over 100 represented by Council of American Islamic Relations (C.A.I.R.), report that they were told, “If you want to pray — Go home”
Reports say some Muslims walked off the job just before 2nd shift started on December 21 and the rest failed to come to work the next day — in protest to Cargill’s inconsiderate and oppressive policies.
Meat companies use Muslim workers to insure customers their meat products are certified “Halal” (similar to Kosher for Jews).
Usually packing houses and retailers can offer Halal meats at a premium, often 50% higher than non-halal products.
The Halal label signifies the meat is choice meat, must have the name of God mentioned, not killed by shooting or stun gun, must be slaughtered humanely, carefully butchered, prepared and packaged under Muslim’s strict guidelines.
Many non-Muslims appreciate the excellent texture, taste and cleanliness afforded by companies using the Halal certification.
Muslims must perform 5 regular salat (prayers) at different times every day. Salat is about 5 minutes and is done in a clean area, facing Makkah (Mecca), then bowing, prostrating and sitting in silence while praying to God.
