The Den of the Blacksmith Frog
This frog is regarded as the most skilful amphibian in building its home. It lives in South Africa. The male builds its home on the riverbank. It starts to spin around in the mud until it has made a broad hole, then it expands the edges of this hole. When this step has been completed, it begins to make strong walls of mud for the hole, and in the end it will have built a reservoir that is ten centimeters deep. Then it sits in this hole and makes noises to attract females for mating. It stays like that until it attracts the attention of a female, and when the female comes, she lays her eggs in the reservoir. The male’s role is to fertilize the eggs.
After that, they both keep watch over the eggs until they hatch. When they hatch, the tadpoles, which are surrounded with a protective cover, emerge and stay in this reservoir, safe from the danger of fish and insects. When they have grown, they quickly jump over the wall which was built to protect the young, and start their lives.
