Tongue Sucking Hadeeth Explained

Hadeeth says:

Before pinpointing at Islam go read 2king 4:34

Muaawiya said:

“I saw the prophet – pbuh – sucking on the tongue or the lips of Al-Hassan son of Ali, may the prayers of Allah be upon him. For no tongue or lips that the prophet sucked on will be tormented (by hell fire)

In the same hadeeth prophet Muhammad peace be upon him mentioned that no lips that were squeezed by prophet Muhammad peace be upon him will be touched by hellfire

What is the actual reason behind the tongue-sucking?

The following narration makes this context clear:

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, heard Hasan and Hussein crying while they were with their mother, so he hurried to them and he said:

مَا شَأْنُ ابْنَيَّ

What is the matter with my boys?

Their mother said:

الْعَطَشُ

It is thirst.

The Prophet went to the source of water but at that time water was scarce. The Prophet called out:

هَلْ أَحَدٌ مِنْكُمْ مَعَهُ مَاءٌ

Does anyone have any water?

But no one had any water, so the Prophet said to their mother:

نَاوِلِينِي أَحَدَهُمَا

Bring me one of them.

Abu Huraira said:

فَأَدْلَعَ لَهُ لِسَانَهُ فَجَعَلَ يَمُصُّهُ حَتَّى هَدَأَ أَوْ سَكَنَ

He massaged his tongue and moistened it until he calmed down.

This tradition was declared reliable by Al-Haythami in Majma’ al-Zawā’id 9/183 and by Ash-Shawkani in Darr al-Saḥābah 242.

Al-Qadi Iyad comments on this tradition, saying:

وَأَعْطَى الْحَسَنَ وَالْحُسَيْنَ لِسَانَهُ فَمَصَّاهُ وَكَانَ يَبْكِيَانِ عَطَشًا فَسَكَتَا

The Prophet gave Hasan and Hussein his tongue and he moistened it as they were crying from thirst, then they calmed down

As we can see, the Prophet was sharing saliva with his two young grandsons because they were suffering from thirst and there was no water available. This was an act of kindness and good parenting in a difficult environment. It does not mean what these anti-Muslim websites have claimed.

So, the reason behind the tongue-sucking was to quench their thirst and help settle them down.

We must remember this was an arid environment (desert) where water was scarce, thus loving parents/guardians did go to such lengths in caring for children:

He gave al-Hasan and al-Husayn his tongue to suck. They had been weeping from thirst and upon this they became quiet.

This was a genuine act of devotion;

had Jesus (Alayhi Salam), Gandi, Guru Nanak or Mother Theresa carried out such an act of devotion to children they would have been praised for it. Sadly, this is not always the case for Prophet Muhammad salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam as malicious Islamophobes on the internet have dark agendas they are pursuing assiduously

Al Hassan was still a baby

He is the grandson of prophet Muhammad peace be upon him

Reasonable people will not disagree with such situations bearing in mind that the Messenger of Allah used always used to play with them using his tongue. In other times he spread out his tongue for them they then would follow him to take it

That is out of his mercy and kindness with the kids

He loved them so much

He used to make them ride on his back and run

They liked him so so much to the extent that they followed him to the Masjid bc they missed him. Nearly they can't stay without him.

He is their everything.

One day he was on pulpit delivering a Friday sermon..they came to him...he stopped the Khutbah and came down to hug them..

Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) delivered a speech to us; meanwhile al-Hasan and al-Husayn came upon there stumbling, wearing red shirts. He came down from the pulpit, took them and ascended it with them. He then said: Allah truly said: "Your property and your children are only trial" (Ixiv.15). I saw both of them, and I could not wait. Afterwards he resumed the speech.

Imagine!

He was a warrior, a state ruler, an Imam in Masjid, the most successful husband, the engineer of this Ummah, fixes people's problems etc now ask yourself how could such a man humble find time for kids to play with

But no he did and was the beloved of elderly and the babies the young and children etc

A man said o Messenger of Allah you kiss kids???

He said i have 10 kids i never kissed any of them!

Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him said

This is the mercy of Allah put inside the hearts of men. What can i do to you if you don't have it!!

Prophet (ﷺ) kissed his grandson Al-Hasan bin 'Ali (May Allah bepleased with them) in the presence of Al-Aqra' bin Habis. Thereupon he remarked: "I have ten children and I have never kissed any one of them." Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) looked at him and said, "He who does not show mercy to others will not be shown mercy".

That's how harsh the Arabs were

But Mohamed Salah Salah Allahu alayhi wa sallam came as mercy to the worlds

Now don't forget this mercy is in the heart of Elisha too who raised a kid from death by putting his mouth on a kid's mouth

●2 kings 4:32

34 Then he got on the bed and lay on the boy, mouth to mouth, eyes to eyes, hands to hands. As he stretched himself out on him, the boy’s body grew warm. 35 Elisha turned away and walked back and forth in the room and then got on the bed and stretched out on him once more. The boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes.

Shall we accuse Elisha prophet of what you said???

Of course not

And because some enemies of Islam always take verses and hadeeths out of context to make them look like misconceptions

Yet one already has to read them in context

●Narrated Usama bin Zaid:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to put me on (one of) his thighs and put Al-Hasan bin `Ali on his other thigh, and then embrace us and say, "O Allah! Please be Merciful to them, as I am merciful to them. "

●Sahih al-Bukhari 6003

Moreover, prophet Muhammad peace be upon him when he spat into a suckling babies using dates too in the mouth it's out of his blessings

He used to spit into the mouths of suckling children and his saliva would satisfy them until nightfall [page 184 in Ash Sifa of Qadi Iyad, Madinah Press, 2004]

He spat in a well that was in Anas’ house and there was no water in Madina sweeter than it – Al Bayhaqi [from page 183 in Ash Sifa of Qadi Iyad, Madinah Press, 2004]

Now

Who told prophet Muhammad peace be upon him that dates should be the first thing babies must suck once they are born?

Their work is published in The Lancet.

Sufar dose should be given to babies as first food

What does Islam say about this?

Narrated Abu Musa: "A son was born to me and I took him to the Prophet (ﷺ) who named him Ibrahim, did Tahnik for him with a date, invoked Allah to bless him and returned him to me. (The narrator added: That was Abu Musa's eldest son.

●Sahih al-Bukhari 5467

Tahnik: is well known in Islam: to soften a date to a baby and put it inside his mouth on his palate

Note that dates that prophet Muhammad peace be upon him gave to babies is far more better than normal sugar. Dates has way more benefits too al hamdulillah
