Some believers tend to be confused when the Wahhabis call themselves Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah. But a cult claiming this does not mean anything if they do not represent the correct teachings of the title that they carry. Below I want to present some ways to differentiate between the false claimers and true Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah.
1. ๐๐ข๐ก๐ฆ๐๐ก๐ฆ๐จ๐ฆ
The CORRECT definition of 'Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah' according to consensus (Ar. ijma’) is that they are:
The Hanbalis, Maturidis and Ash’aris in creed. And the Hanafis, Malikis, Shafi'is and Hanbalis in fiqh.
The FALSE definition:
Following in Creed and Fiqh the following: Muhammad ibn ‘Abdul-Wahhab, Muhammad Amir as-San’ani, Jamal ud-Din al-Afghani, Isma’il ad-Dehlawi, Sayyid Qutb, ‘Abdul-‘Aziz ibn Baz, Salih ibn al-‘Uthaymin, Nasir ud-Din al-Albani, Rabi’ al-Madhkhali, Muqbil al-Wadi’i, al-Kalbani, Muhammad al-‘ฤrifi and other contemporary preachers.
What we understand from the above is that the correct given definition has been agreed upon for over a thousand years, and anyone following something else is not from Ahl us-Sunnah.

Knowing their creed is pivotal, if one looks at their beliefs and if it contradicts the Qur'an, Sunnah and Ijma then one will be able to differentiate. Some of their false beliefs are:
Belief in Tajsim (anthropomorphism - that Allah resembs His creation)
Allah being in a place
Allah being in a direction
Allah sits like a human does
Allah being limited
Allah being imperfect
The Prophets sinning and other affairs.

When we talk about the creed of Ahl us-Sunnah wa'l Jama’ah then we refer to the following books of the Sunnฤซ jama’ah.
Hanbali:
- Al-I’tiqad by Ahmad ibn Hanbal
- Lum’at ul-I’tiqad by Ibn Qudamah Al-Maqdisi
- Nihayat ul-Mubtadi'in by Ibn Hamdan
- Lawmi’ ul-Anwar ul-Bahiyyah by As-Saffarini
Maturidi:
- Al-Fiqh ul-Akbar by Abu Hanifah
- Kitab ut-Tawhid by Al-Maturidi
- Bayan us-Sunnah by At-Tahawi
- ‘Aqa'id un-Nasafi
Ash’ari:
- Al-Ibanah by Al-Ash’ari
- ‘Aqidat ul-‘Awam by Al-Marzuqi
- Al-Kharadat ul-Bahiyyah by Ahmad Ad-Dardir
- Umm ul-Barahin by As-Sanusi
Deviant Wahhabi literature:
- Kitab ut-Tawแธฅฤซd of Ibn ‘Abdul Wahhab
- Taqwiyat ul-Iman by Isma’il Dehlawi
- Sharh ‘Aqidah at-Tahawiyyah by Ibn Abi al-‘Izz
- Commentary texts written by the Wahhabis in general, especially by Al-Fawzan, Ibn al-‘Uthaymin, Bin Baz, al-Albani, al-Madkhali and their ilk.
- Any Sa’udi government published books on creed in general

A final point is that one can recognize the Wahhabis in their appearance. In appearance they avoid beautifying themselves in general. They tend to have large, unkempt, hideous looking beards with shaven heads. They tend to be bareheaded and raise wear high raised trousers. And all of this was the description of the first Khariji called Dhul Khuwaisarah at-Tamimi, the Khariji who disrespected the Messenger of Allah ๏ทบ.
A final point:
If Wahhabiyyah claim that they are Ahl us-Sunnah then they should be asked to define who Ahl us-Sunnah are. If they say that they are those who follow the Qur'an and the Sunnah then they should be asked to be specific as even the cults claim to follow the Qur'an and Sunnah. We need to know specifically who to follow to understand the Qur'an and the Sunnah.
If they say, "We follow the Salaf". Then one must ask them, "Who specifically? And which books?" As the Salaf are many.
But they will not know. Because the standard reply to the one who claims Ahl us-Sunnah is that they are the Hanafis, Malikis, Shafiis, Hanbalis, Atharis (Mufawwidah), Ash'aris and Maturidis.
