I have been updating (4 updates) on marriage for a while now. In this context is a very volatile concept of "Muta". Mutah as opposed to Nikah is temporary marriage in which period of marriage is fixed by agreement. No formality of talaaq for termination is required. Time-limit is the limit itself. Fyzee says that the old Arabian custom of Muta was justified as being useful in times of war and travels. But Prophet Muhammad (saw) prohibited it and later on Caliph Umar suppressed it ruthlessly. Among the Shias themselves, only Ithna Ashari School recognised it, and it is rejected by every other Muslim School. Critics often term Muta as a "marriage for pleasure" and it is a "legalised prostitution". Though the two are similar, it must, however, be appreciated that in prostitution neither the child so born is legitimate nor is entitled to inherit from the father BUt the child born of Muta is termed legitimate and capable of inheriting from the father. (See Muslim Law; P 61)
