Ibn Mas’ud reported: A man among the helpers said something harmful to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that I decided not to discuss it with him and I wished I could have been ransomed from it with every people and every wealth. The Prophet said, “Moses, upon him blessings and peace, was harmed with greater than this and he remained patient.” Then he told us about a prophet who was denied by his people when he came to them with the command of Allah, and he said, “He was wiping the blood from his face and saying: O Allah, forgive my people because indeed they do not know.”

An-Nawawi said, “In this is what the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was upon of forbearance, patience, forgiveness and compassion for his people, his supplication for them to receive guidance and be forgiven, and that they be excused for their sins because they do not know.”

عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ تَكَلَّمَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ الْأَنْصَارِ كَلِمَةً فِيهَا مَوْجِدَةٌ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَمْ تُقِرَّنِي نَفْسِي أَنْ أَخْبَرْتُ بِهَا النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَوَدِدْتُ أَنِّي افْتَدَيْتُ مِنْهَا بِكُلِّ أَهْلٍ وَمَالٍ فَقَالَ قَدْ آذَوْا مُوسَى عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاة وَالسَّلَامُ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَصَبَرَ ثُمَّ أَخْبَرَ أَنَّ نَبِيًّا كَذَّبَهُ قَوْمُهُ وَشَجُّوهُ حِينَ جَاءَهُمْ بِأَمْرِ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ وَهُوَ يَمْسَحُ الدَّمَ عَنْ وَجْهِهِ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِقَوْمِي فَإِنَّهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

قال النووي فِيهِ مَا كَانُوا عَلَيْهِ صَلَوَاتُ اللَّهِ وَسَلَامُهُ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنَ الْحِلْمِ وَالتَّصَبُّرِ وَالْعَفْوِ وَالشَّفَقَةِ عَلَى قَوْمِهِمْ وَدُعَائِهِمْ لَهُمْ بِالْهِدَايَةِ وَالْغُفْرَانِ وَعُذْرِهِمْ فِي جِنَايَتِهِمْ عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ بِأَنَّهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
