VOLCANOES form when MAGMA - melted rock - pushes up through the Earth's crust. The crust is the hard layer of Earth that we walk on. Volcanoes can EXPLODE when they erupt! A volcano called Krakatoa exploded SO HARD that the force of the explosion went around the Earth THREE AND A HALF TIMES! Some volcanoes don't explode and instead leak lava slowly enough that people can walk away from it! But the lava is still VERY hot and dangerous!

One of the biggest volcanoes in the world is in the United States, right under Yellowstone National Park! The ground at Yellowstone is actually RISING every year as pressure builds in the volcano!
