How the members of a family recognize one another
The members of the family should have a special mechanism for recognizing one another, and the ways of recognizing one another vary from one species to another.
• Birds which build their nests on the ground, for example, recognize their chicks by sound and outward appearance. This includes the seagull which feeds on the rinca fish. This bird lives in a large colony but is able to recognize the sound of its own chick in the midst of the huge crowd without confusing it with the sounds of all the others, even if the chick is far from its sight. If another small bird comes along, it quickly expels it.
• Mammals are able to recognize their young by means of scent. The mother smells her infant the moment it is born, and after that this scent is the means that she uses to recognize her young.
• The penguin is regarded as one of the most successful animals in using means of recognizing one another. It seems almost impossible for us to recognize one bird out of many that look exactly alike.
However, the female penguin can easily distinguish the members of its family without making any mistake. Even though she stays away for two or three months to bring food for her young one, when she returns she has no problem in recognizing her mate and young from among the hundreds of other penguins.
Even stranger than that, the penguins gather their young ones in one place, which is like a kindergarten then they go out to sea. These birds often stick next to one another, which is very important for protecting the young from the severe cold. The important question here is: how do the adult penguins recognize their young from among hundreds of others when they return from hunting?
For young penguins, the process of identification is easier because the adult penguins start to make high pitched noises, and the young one is able to recognize its parents and rushes toward them.
Undoubtedly using sound is the best method for the members of the penguin colony to recognize one another among thousands of penguins. But how can these birds which resemble one another so closely, to the point of being almost identical, have voices that are different from one another? How did these birds get this ability to distinguish between different voices?
It is impossible for the penguin to have acquired this ability by means of its will alone. So who gave them this unique ability?
The obvious answer, concerning which there can be no doubt, is that Allah, the Exalted, is the One Who gave them different voices and made these birds capable of distinguishing between each other. He is the One Who has made it easy for them to live in this amazing fashion.
