The Prophet ﷺ said: “Fast the Day of Ashura, for indeed I anticipate that Allah will forgive (the sins of) the year before it." [Jami at Tirmidhi 752]
It's recommended to also fast on the 9th of Muharram to contradict the practice of he Jews.
Ibn 'Abbas reorted that when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) fasted on the day of Ashura and commanded that it should be observed as a fast, they (his Companions) said to him: 'O Messenger of Allah, it is a day which the Jews and Christians hold in high esteem.' Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “When the next year comes, God willing, we would observe fast on the 9th (of Muharram). But the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) died before the coming of the next year.

** It's recommended to fast on the 9th & 10th. If one misses fasting on the 9th, then he/she can go ahead and fast it on the 10th & 11th. The expiation of sins refers to minor sins. Major sins will need repentance.
For those who want to be on the safe side, one should go ahead and fast on all three days because of the difference of opinion regarding the moon sighting.
Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated in al-Musannaf (2/313) from Tawoos (may Allah have mercy on him) that he used to fast one day before it and one day after it, for fear of missing it.
