Salmon’s Journey
There is a fish called the salmon which spends years of its life in the sea, then returns to the same freshwater stream where it was born, and dies there. Thus, it is born in one place, lives in another place, and dies in the same place as it was born, after laying eggs before its death. In this way, another generation is born, not knowing anything of its parents and not learning anything from them; then it migrates from the river to the sea, and spends its life there, then it migrates to the place where it will lay its eggs and then die. During its journey from the sea to the river, it sticks to the side of the river from which the stream branches out or into which it pours, and it does not stick to the other side.
If a salmon which swims upstream is moved to a stream other than the stream in which it was born, it will realize that this is not its stream, and will try to find a way to the right place. What is it that makes the salmon go back to the place of its birth in this precise manner? Is it chance or Divine decree?
