Prophet (ﷺ) said, "O Allah! Do not turn my grave into an idol that is worshipped. Allah has cursed people who take the graves of their Prophets as places of worship." (Musnad Ahmad 7311, Saheeh)
Grave worship = Idol Worship
“And who is more astray than one who calls on (invokes) besides Allaah (such as Prophets, saints, angels etc), who will not answer him till the Day of Resurrection, and who are (even) unaware of their calls (invocations) to them?"
"And when mankind are gathered (on the Day of Resurrection), they (who were called upon) will become enemies for them and will deny their worship."
[#Quran 46:5-6]
Dua, prayer, sacrifice are forms of Worship which is the Right of Allah ALONE - directing any of these to the prophets (or "saints" or anyone) is making a partner with Allah in worship.
"Those whom they invoke (or call upon) besides Allah have not created anything, but are themselves created. (They are) dead, lifeless, and they do not (even) know when they will be resurrected." (#Quran 16:20)
Prophet (ﷺ) said, “No one should seek to me for assistance. Indeed, it is Allah (Alone) Who is to be sought for assistance and help.” (At-Tabarani)
Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Whoever dies while calling upon others beside Allah will enter Hellfire.”(Bukhārī 4227)
"They worship others beside Allah that neither profits them nor benefits them. They say: "These are our #intercessors with Allah." Exalted is He above all that which they #associate as partners with Him!" -(#Quran 10:18)
"Verily, those whom you call upon besides Allah are slaves like you." (#Quran 7:194)
"if you ask them: "Who created the heavens and the earth?" Surely, they will say: "Allah". Say (to them) : "Tell me then, the things that you invoke (call upon) beside Allah, if Allah intended some harm for me, could they remove His harm, or if He (Allah) intended some mercy for me, could they withhold His Mercy?" Say: "Sufficient for me is Allah; upon Him (Alone) rely the (wise) reliers." (#Quran 39:38)
The #shirk of making dua to Prophets/saints
To call upon anyone (in the unseen seeking assistance) is Dua, and #Dua is worship. It is the exclusive right of Allah ALONE to be called upon (invoked) - sharing this with anyone else (whether it's calling Prophet #Muhammadﷺ or Jesus or "saints" or angels or whoever or whatever) is major shirk which expels a person out of Islam.
"Do not call upon anyone beside Allah"
(#Quran 72:18)
Prophetﷺ said,
“Du‘aa’ is worship.”
(Then he recited the verse)
"None has the right to be worshipped but He, so call upon (invoke) Him (Alone) making your worship pure for Him Alone." (#Ghafir 40:65)
Say (O Muhammad): "I have been forbidden to worship those whom you invoke (call upon) besides Allah" (#Ghafir 40:66)
Islam is pure & direct relationship between the Creator & the creation, placing barriers or intermedieries between us & Allah is shirk - such as directing our dua (worship) to anyone else beside (or along with) Allah.
Prophet (ﷺ) said, “If you ask, then ask of Allaah, and if you seek help, then seek the help of Allaah.” (Tirmidhi, 2516)
Al-Kahf 18:102
Do then those who disbelieve think that they can take My slaves [i.e Prophets, angels etc] as Auliya' (protectors, helpers) alongside Me? Verily, We have prepared Hell as an entertainment for the disbelievers (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism).
It's prohibited to build anything over graves.
Prophet (ﷺ) said, “When a righteous man died among them, they would build a place of worship over his grave and put those images in it. They are the most evil of mankind before Allaah.” (Al-Bukhaari, 427; Muslim, 528)
Prophet (ﷺ) forbade plastering over graves, sitting on them and erecting structures over them. (Narrated by Muslim, 970.)
Ali ibn Abi Talib (ra) said: “Shall I not send you on the same mission as the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) sent me? Do not leave any statue without erasing it, and do not leave any raised grave without leveling it.” (Narrated by Muslim, 969).
