"And Allah taught Adam the names of all things" (Surah Baqarah 2:31)

This verse is taken from the first story mentioned in the Qur'an, the story of the creation of Adam. When the angels expressed concern about the creation of the human race and the bloodshed humans will cause, Allah taught Adam the names of all things to prove the superiority of righteous humans over Jinn and Angels.

This superiority lies in the human ability to learn about our world and use this knowledge to benefit ourselves and others. Ibn Kathir explains this verses as, "Allah taught Adam the names of everything, their proper names, the names of their characteristics, and what they do," This clearly refers to the worldly sciences.

This verse refutes the misconceptions that Islam is averse to seeking worldly knowledge. There exist some groups of Muslims who believe we should only study Islam, and that learning about medicine, psychology, etc is a waste of time. Such a belief is in contradiction with the teachings of the Qur'an and Sunnah, the practice of the early generations and the spirit of Islam.
In order for the ummah to succeed, we need righteous Muslims who understand their religion as well as the beneficial worldly sciences and utilize this knowledge to make this world a better place.
