The Archdiocese of New York on Friday released a list of at least 120 priests and other clergy members accused of sexually abusing a child or having child pornography that have worked under its jurisdiction.
The list includes names of bishops, high school teachers, a scouting chaplain and a notorious cardinal.
The release, from the nation's second-largest Roman Catholic archdiocese, follows more than 120 such disclosures from other dioceses around the country as the church reckons with demands for transparency about sex abuse by clergy.
In a letter to church members, Cardinal Timothy Dolan said he realizes 'the shame that has come upon our church due to the sexual abuse of minors.'
He asked forgiveness 'for the failings of those clergy' who betrayed the trust invested in them to protect young people.
'It is my heartfelt prayer that together we as a family of faith may be healed,' Dolan added.
Church abuse watchdogs and lawyers for abuse accusers said the release of the list was a positive step, but some of them saw it as incomplete.
It doesn't include accused members of religious orders who worked in the archdiocese's churches and schools, though some orders have released their own lists. Nor does it list priests who were ordained elsewhere and later served in New York.
And there are no details on accused priests' past assignments or the allegations against them, although some have emerged in news accounts, lawsuits and criminal cases.
'It's certainly a good thing that they've come out with the list,' said Terry McKiernan of Bishop Accountability, a watchdog group. But 'do they still not see that this very, very reluctant way of offering information about the crisis is the wrong way for them?'
Archdiocese spokesman Joseph Zwilling said that 'the important thing is that we have released all of the names of priests that have a credible and substantiated charge brought against them,' plus those awaiting a church determination on allegations, and those newly accused through an archdiocese-run compensation process.
The program has paid out $65 million to over 350 people in the past three years.
The list includes priests ordained between 1908 and 1988. Many have died, and the archdiocese said none is currently working in the ministry.
Most of the alleged abuse happened in the 1970s, '80s and early '90s, but there have been two credible allegations of sex abuse by active clergy since 2002, according to the archdiocese. It said authorities were alerted about both those cases.
Some priests on the list were convicted of sex crimes, including the late Rev. Edward Pipala, who served seven years in federal prison after admitting in 1993 to taking at least 11 boys across state lines for illicit sex.
The list also includes once-high-ranking church officials.
Former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, who was ordained in New York, became archbishop of Washington and one of the most visible church officials in the U.S.
Then, in February, he became the first cardinal defrocked in the sex abuse scandal of recent years. An internal church investigation had found him guilty. McCarrick's lawyer declined to comment Friday.
Bishop John Jenik was removed from his public duties in November after being accused of inappropriate behavior with a teenage boy in the 1980s - an accusation he denies. The Vatican is reviewing the matter.
Bishop James McCarthy resigned in 2002 after the archdiocese was alerted about his affairs with women, which he acknowledged.
He mentioned starting a relationship with a woman when she was around 21 years old, but some questions were later raised about whether she'd been underage.
No charges were filed, and the church hasn't made a determination. A message was left Friday evening at a possible phone number for McCarthy.
Others were school leaders and teachers, deacons, parish priests, and clerics who worked with charities and youth groups.
One served as a Catholic Youth Organization director in New York and as national chaplain of the National Catholic Committee on Scouting in the 1970s, when he allegedly abused a boy at a summer camp, according to news accounts.
The priest died in 1984, over two decades before the allegations became publicly known.
Based at St. Patrick's Cathedral, the New York Archdiocese includes parts of New York City and several counties north of the city.
The only U.S. archdiocese with more Catholics is that of Los Angeles.

Istibra is to make the urethra free from drops of urine. It is wajib for men to do istibra, that is, not to leave any drops in the urethra, by walking, coughing, or by lying on their left side.
They must not perform wudu' unless they are satisfied that there are no drops of urine left.
One drop oozing out will both nullify their wudu' and soil their underpants.
If less than a palmful oozes onto underpants, the salat one performed after doing wudu' will be rendered makruh.
If more than this amount oozes, one's salat will not be valid.

Doing Istinja is Sunnah Muakkadah (Emphasized Sunnah) when we pass impurity from any of our two passages (front & back).
It is Sunnah to purify the area with the use of stone in old time nowadays equivalent of (Tissue in modern times) or water.
It is best to make use of both.
So you would wipe the area first with a stone (modern day we would use tissue) and then wash the area with water.
If one does not have access to both water and stone, it would be sufficient to clean the area with just one,
for example, just using water or just using stone (tissue), of course using water would be better as it will clean the area thoroughly and eliminate the impurity.
Overall the Sunnah is to purify the area.
It is recommended to use 3 stones, even if purity is achieved with less, The Prophet Peace Be Upon Him has stated “Perform istinja with three stones”
if you use more than its also fine,
it is recommended to use odd numbers such as three, five.etc
Stone: In the past there was no tissues, hence the use of stones was practiced. Not every stone is suitable for istinja, there are certain conditions of a cleansing stone which need to be met such as:
The stone should not be too rough and not too smooth; as if it is too rough it could harm you, and if it is is too smooth, it will not serve its purpose.
The stone should not be valuable, this applies generally to anything that you are going to use for istinja, the item should not be valuable, whether it’s a stone, paper, tissue or anything else..
The stone should not be respected.
As the area we are cleaning is not pure, and using something that generally you or others would respect is not suitable.
How to do istinja
After you have relived yourself you are now ready to do istinja, I will outline in simple steps on how to do istinja.

If the scrotum is loosely hanging (generally when the body temperature is warm) he would wipe with the first stone (tissue) from the front area (the part closest to the testacies) wiping towards the back.
With the second stone (tissue) he would wipe from the back (rear part of the anus) towards the front, and with the third stone (tissue) he would wipe from the front towards the back.
If the scrotum is not loose (generally when the body temperature is clod) he would first wipe from the back area of the anus towards the front (the part closest to the testacies).

The female would always wipe first from the front (part closest to the vagina) wiping towards the back, and with the second stone (tissue) wiping from the back to the front and so on.

Wash both the hands; in case of any impurity that may have gone onto the skin during step one.

Pour water over the anus area and rub the area using the inner part of your fingers (Not the side where your nail is).

Men would start by using their middle finger when rubbing and cleaning with water, than he would use his wedding finger (ring finger), so that he is using both his middle and ring finger both to clean together.
He should not just use one finger to complete his istinjah as its possible that the area would not be fully cleaned with just the one finger.

Females would start by using both her middle and ring finger from the beginning.
So she would use two fingers from the beginning to clean.

Step 4

You should try utmost in cleaning until the stench is completely removed from your body.
If one is not fasting, they should also relax their buttocks so that the water can full clean the exit of the passage thoroughly.
If one is fasting, they should be cautions to ensure that no water goes inside the body which will nullify the fast.

Step 5

One you have completed the washing, you would wash your hands, and if one is also fasting, they should wipe the area washed to ensure there is no water left in case it enters the body whilst standing., which would again nullify the fast.

❈ Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, "If anyone performs Wudu' properly, then comes to the Friday prayer, listens to the Khutbah (religious talk) attentively and keeps silent, his (minor) sins between that Friday and the following Friday will be forgiven, with the addition of three more days; but he who touches pebbles has caused an interruption. ''

Commentary:
1. "If anyone performs ablution properly'' means does it in accordance with the Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam), that is to say, one should not exceed the prescribed limits, nor should one use water extravagantly. One should wash every organ of the body involved in "Wudu'', at the most for three times. One should neither use water in excess of the need nor leave any of the organs unwashed or partly washed in Wudu'. This Hadith also makes it evident that it is more meritorious to perform Wudu' at home.

2.Sins of ten days are pardoned because every virtue has at least ten-times reward. Here sins means minor sins as the major ones are not forgiven without sincere repentance nor are Huquq-ul-`Ibad i.e., (rights of people) forgiven without compensation.
3.One should listen to the Khutbah quietly with full attention. One must avoid toying with anything (such as straws, one's watch, etc.) as this is a useless exercise, which will doubtlessly deprive one of the Friday reward.

Commentary: This Hadith makes it clear that the good actions mentioned in it are means of forgiveness of sins but only if one saves oneself from major sins. Thus, it is abundantly clear that the sins which are pardoned through these good actions are minor sins. Major sins will not be forgiven by means of Salat and Saum (fasting). Sincere repentance for them is indispensable.
