Long before Black History

Long before Black History Month even came into existence, Allah had revealed an entire Surah in the Quran which speaks out against racism. A chapter that teaches us that it’s not the color of skin that makes one superior to the other. This was Surah Luqman.
Do you know who Luqman was?
Luqman belonged to the Nubian people, the black people of Egypt. Allah granted him wisdom but not prophethood. While Luqman was preaching, a man came up to him and said, “Aren't you a slave, who looked after my sheep? He said, “Yes.” The man asked, “What raised you to this high status?”. Luqman said 4 things:
🌟 Divine decree
🌟 Repaying trust
🌟 Telling the truth
🌟 And keeping silent about matters that do not concern him.
We have several lessons to draw from his life. Luqman was sold as a slave but the man who bought Luqman was a good and intelligent person. He treated Luqman with kindness and he sensed that Luqman has a special kind of wisdom and so he tested him one day. He said to Luqman, “I want you to slaughter a sheep and bring me back the worst part of the sheep.” and so Luqman slaughtered the sheep and brought back the tongue and the heart. The man was shocked at the wisdom of Luqman, and he wanted to see more about his insight. So he sent him to slaughter another sheep and bring me back the best part of the sheep. And so Luqman slaughtered the sheep and he brought back the same two parts - the tongue and the heart.
The man was shocked and he asked Luqman, “Why do you show this?'' And Luqman said to him that if a person is pure, then his tongue and his heart are all sweet but if the person is bitter, the tongue and the heart are also bitter and wicked.
There are many lessons for us to derive from this man- But most importantly, was black, he was given such a huge status and wisdom by Allah that he has been directly mentioned in the Quran even though he is not a Prophet of Allah!
This is what Islam says about racism. We know that neither the race nor the societal status of the person defines his superiority in the eyes of Allah. It is only the level of taqwa and sincerity that a person has that will raise his status in front of Allah.
