The Shīʿah claim that the event of Ghadīr Khumm proves that ʿAlī رضي الله عنه was appointed as the political and spiritual successor of the Prophet ﷺ. But is that really the case?
The Prophet ﷺ stopped at Ghadīr Khumm during his return from Ḥajj — in a remote area — and addressed the companions. He said:
“Whoever’s Mawlā I am, ʿAlī is also his Mawlā.”
But Mawlā does not always mean “leader” or “successor.” It also means beloved, loyal friend, supporter — depending on context. The Prophet ﷺ was resolving tension due to prior grievances, not declaring khilāfah.
If Ghadīr Khumm truly announced a divinely ordained successorship, why did the Companions pledge allegiance to Abū Bakr رضي الله عنه at Saqīfah?
Why did ʿAlī himself pledge allegiance? Why did no one — including Fāṭimah رضي الله عنها — protest using this “announcement”?
Because there was no such announcement.
The idea of Ghadīr Khumm being “appointment of Imāmate” was fabricated and amplified in later years by extremists. Early reliable historians — like Ibn Isḥāq, Ibn Hishām, and al-Ṭabarī — did not treat this event as succession.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Abū Bakr and ʿUmar are the leaders of the elderly of Paradise after the Prophets.” (al-Tirmidhī 3664; Ṣaḥīḥ by al-Albānī)
This cannot be reconciled with the Shīʿī idea that they were hypocrites and usurpers. The Prophet ﷺ praised them clearly — repeatedly.
