They fasted…
They memorised the Qur’ān…
Their foreheads were bruised from sujūd…
Their tongues constantly reciting the kalimah…
But they were cursed.
Yes — cursed.
The Khawārij were not people who drank alcohol or committed open sins. No. They appeared outwardly righteous, but their hearts were poisoned with pride, rebellion, and misguidance.
The Prophet ﷺ said about them:
"They will recite the Qur’ān, but it will not go beyond their throats. They will exit the religion just as an arrow passes through a target."
They rebelled against the Sahābah.
They made takfīr of the most righteous Muslims.
They shed blood — unjustly and without fear of Allāh.
They killed ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (رضي الله عنه), one of the best of the Ummah.
They wore the garments of piety, but waged war against the very people chosen by Allāh — the companions of His Messenger ﷺ.
They thought their acts of worship earned them Jannah.
But the Prophet ﷺ called them “dogs of Hellfire.”
Worship without humility…
Qur’ān without understanding…
Piety without respect for the scholars and rulers…
All of this becomes a highway straight to Jahannam — if guided by arrogance and bidʿah.
Just because someone looks religious — it doesn't mean they are on the truth.
Then beware — they are walking in the footsteps of the Khawārij.
Examine carefully: If you see a man’s way is that of the Khawārij — even if he fasts and prays — do not sit with him or listen to him.
Not the Khawārij.
True righteousness is not in looks, volume, or claims.
It is in humility, obedience, and sticking to the Sunnah — as understood by the Salaf of this Ummah.
Imām Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله) said:
"If those who give Sadaqah [charity] knows that their Sadaqah falls on Allah (Taʿālā)'s Hand before the hand of the poor, then surely, the joy of giving would be more than the joy of receiving."
[Madārij Al-Sālikīn]
May Allah accept from us all. May He write us among those who gave when giving was hardest, and loved Him when it mattered most.
