1. John 12:14–15 (NIV):
“Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written: ‘Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.’”
2. Matthew 21:1–7
“As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, ‘Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me…’
The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on.”
3. Mark 11:1–7
“As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples and said to them, ‘Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here…’
When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it.”
4. Luke 19:28–35
> “After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, ‘Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here…’
They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it.”
Matthew, Mark, Luke, John → all describe Jesus riding a donkey (or donkey’s colt) into Jerusalem.
The Gospels say this was a “fulfillment” of Zechariah 9:9 (Old Testament prophecy):
> “Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”
In Islam, Allah honored Prophet Muhammad ﷺ with a miraculous journey — Al-Isrā’ wal-Mi‘rāj — far greater than riding into one city. It was a journey through the heavens.
In one night, Allah sent the angel Jibrīl (Gabriel) to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in Makkah.
He was taken on a special steed called Buraq (faster than lightning, described as larger than a donkey and smaller than a mule).
From the Ka‘bah in Makkah, he rode to Masjid Al-Aqsa in Jerusalem.
There, he led all the prophets in prayer — a sign that he is the final Messenger and leader of all prophets.
---
From Jerusalem, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was taken up through the heavens.
He met prophets in each heaven:
1st Heaven: Prophet Adam
2nd Heaven: Prophet Isa (Jesus) and Yahya (John)
3rd Heaven: Prophet Yusuf (Joseph)
4th Heaven: Prophet Idris (Enoch)
5th Heaven: Prophet Harun (Aaron)
6th Heaven: Prophet Musa (Moses)
7th Heaven: Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham)
Each prophet welcomed him, acknowledging his mission.
At the highest point (Sidrat al-Muntahā), he received the direct command of Ṣalāh (the five daily prayers) for his followers.
Originally 50 prayers a day, but after discussion with Prophet Musa (who advised that people would not be able to bear it), Allah reduced it to 5 prayers daily — with the reward of 50.
This shows both Allah’s mercy and the special status of Prophet Muhammad
Christianity shows Jesus’ ride into Jerusalem on a donkey
— a symbolic but earthly event.
Islam shows Prophet Muhammad ﷺ’s journey on Buraq — from Makkah to Jerusalem, then up to the heavens
.
One is earthly transport, the other is divine transport.
---
Islam’s narrative is consistent, logical, and majestic.
The Night Journey emphasizes:
The connection between Makkah and Jerusalem.
The unity of all prophets under the final Messenger ﷺ.
The mercy of Allah in giving humanity the most important act of worship: Salah.
---
The Bible shows Jesus riding a donkey into a city. Islam shows Prophet Muhammad ﷺ riding Buraq beyond the universe, meeting the prophets, and receiving Salah — the key to success in this life and the next.
