Surah Al-Baqarah V. 184
(Fasting) for a fixed number of days; but if any of you is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed number (Should be made up) from days later. For those who can do it (With hardship), is a ransom, the feeding of one that is indigent. But he that will give more, of his own free will,- it is better for him. And it is better for you that ye fast, if ye only knew.
Islam is easy. Allah has not ordered anything for us except that it is good and beneficial for us. He has not ordered us to abandon anything except that it is corrupt and harmful to us. When Allah ordered us to fast the month of Ramadan, is was to benefit us and bring us closer to Him, not to harm us nor inconvenience us.
Allah provides for those who are not capable to complete the fast. Those people are given excuse and are told how to go about either making up the fast later or to give expiation in the event they cannot fast at all.
And above this, Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) reminds us that it is BETTER FOR US to fast, if we only knew. By closing this verse with this reminder, Allah lets us know exactly how important the fast is. It is not something to be sought to be excused from. If we only know how good it is for us to fast, we would do it no matter the hardship we endure. SubhanAllah.
