The Sun Will Rise Tomorrow But You May Not 1

The New's Letter
Repentance
As-salaam 'alaikum [peace be unto you],

The Sun Will Rise Tomorrow But You May Not 1

Can you be sure you will live to see tomorrow?
Are you planning for a future you may not have?

One of the biggest problems we have as human beings is that we forget we are not in control of everything. We go through our days thinking that we will become better at practising our religion when we have finished college or university or when we get married or when we have children.

When…when….when….

Do you know that you are going to achieve these goals you have set yourself? Do you know when you are going to pass away?

No.

None but Allāh knows when our time of death will happen.

We think that we will ask for Allāh’s forgiveness just before we die, but what if we can’t?

Do you really want to meet Allāh without first having repented for your sins?

The Prophet Muhammad (may the peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said: “All the sons of Adam are sinners, but the best of sinners are those who repent often.” 2

From the above hadith it is clear that we are indeed going to sin – it is in our very nature, but the good news is that we can do something about it – we can repent. Allāh tells us in the Qur’an:

“But as for one who had repented, believed, and done righteousness, it is promised by Allāhthat he will be among the successful.” 3

We are under the impression that each time we sin we are wronging Allāh, but what we are actually doing is wronging our own soul. Allāh is not in need of our good deeds – we are the ones who will need these deeds on the Day of Judgment. 4

What will you be able to do when you are standing in front of Allāh and your bad deeds outweigh the good?

You will not be able to do anything. By then it is too late.

The Prophet (may the peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said:

“Indeed Allāh accepts the repentance of a slave as long as (his soul does not reach his throat).” 5

Since we do not know when our soul will be taken it is an obligation on us to turn to Allāh in repentance. We know that Allāh will only permit us into Jannah 6 if we have repented:

“And Paradise will be brought near to the righteous, not far, [It will be said],
"This is what you were promised - for every returner [to Allāh] and keeper [of His covenant] Who feared the Most Merciful unseen and came with a heart returning [in repentance]
Enter it in peace.
This is the Day of Eternity."
7

Every action we do, every word we utter is written down by the angels, with repentance that record can be erased, along with the sin from your heart and soul. So, how do you achieve the correct level of repentance?

The first step is that you need to admit to yourself that you have committed the sin, it is wrong and you will stop doing the sin. The second step is to regret the sin – sincerely and deeply, following this you pray to Allāh to beg for His forgiveness for the sin. The last step is to make a sincere intention in your heart that you will not return to the sin.

There is one thing that we should all remember - no sin is greater than Allāh’s forgiveness. The Shaytaan will come to you and try to influence you into believing that you have committed too many sins to be able to be forgiven. It would be arrogant to think your sins are greater than Allāh’s Mercy. He is known as ‘The Acceptor of Repentance’ 8. In the Qur’an we are told:

“And it is He who accepts repentance from his servants and pardons misdeeds, and He knows what you do.” 9

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (may the peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) was the best of men yet he still repented to Allāh. Al-Agharr bin Yasar Al-Muzani narrated that the Messenger of Allāh (may the peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said:

"Turn you people in repentance to Allāh and beg pardon of Him. I turn to Him in repentance a hundred times a day.” 10

If Allāh’s Messenger repented to Allāh one hundred times a day, that is the least we can do, isn’t it?

We will never be sinless, Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may the peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said:

“By Him in Whose Hand is my life, if you were not to commit sin, Allāh would sweep you out of existence and He would replace (you by) those people who would commit sin and seek forgiveness from Allāh, and He would have pardoned them.” 11

We can see from the above hadith that Allāh wants us to repent, because it means that we are turning back to him and living our lives under his command. Repentance humbles us and makes us realise that we need Allāh’s grace and mercy in order to achieve our ultimate goal – Jannah.

So let’s make this month the start of regular repentance to The Oft-Forgiving 12, Most Merciful13.

Are you ready to repent NOW?
