(1) "When the Prophet would enter the toilet 'He said: "O Allah! Indeed I seek refuge in You from Al-Khubith and Al- Khaba'ith." (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from male and female devils) (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 6)
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبْثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ
Allahuma inny a’udhoo bika min al Khoobth wal-khaba’ith
(2) There is no specific evidence for this sunnah, but scholars agree that it is recommended to enter the bathroom with our left foot and exit with our right.
The general rule is the things that represent purity, elegance and good acts is preferred to be done with the right while those things that involve impurity or do not have elegance (i.e. the toilet) should be done with the left.
Similarly when entering the mosque, we do so with our right foot and exit with our left.
The Prophet (ﷺ) used his right hand for taking his food and drink and used his left hand for other purposes. (Sunan Abi Dawud 32)
`Aisha (RA) said: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to start everything from the right (for good things) whenever it was possible in all his affairs; for example: in washing, combing or wearing shoes. ( Sahih al-Bukhari 426)
(3) Aishah said:"Whoever tells you that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) urinated standing up, do not believe him, for he would not urinate except while squatting." (an-Nasa’I Hadith 29)
(4) Abu Huraira said: When any one amongst you squats for answering the call of nature, he should neither turn his face towards the Qibla nor turn his back towards it. ( Sahih Muslim 265)
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Do not face towards the Qiblah nor turn your backs toward it when defecating or urinating, rather face toward the east or the west." (An-Nasa’I Hadith 21)
(5) The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whenever anyone of you urinates he should not hold his male private part or clean his private parts with his right hand. (Sahih al-Bukhari 154)
(6) The Prophet would conceal himself and be at a distance and away from the sight of others whenever he went to answer the call of nature
Narrated Mughira bin Shu`ba: Once I was traveling with the Prophet (ﷺ) and he said, "O Mughira! take this container of water." I took it and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) went far away till he disappeared. He answered the call of nature and was wearing a Syrian cloak. (Sahih al-Bukhari 363)
(7) the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) passed by two graves, and said: “They are being punished, but they are not being punished for any major sin. One of them used not to protect himself (i.e. keep himself clean from) his urine (Sahih al-Bukhari 1378)
(8) Anas bin Malik said:
When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) entered the privy, a servant and I used to carry a skin of water, and a pointed staff, and he would cleanse himself with water. (Sahih Muslim 271a)
(9) Jabir b. 'Abdullah reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say:
When anyone wipes himself with pebbles (after answering the call of nature) he should do this odd number of times (Sahih Muslim 239)
* This also applies to tissue paper or any other means of cleaning oneself
(10) A man passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) whilst he was urinating, and greeted him. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to him: “If you see me in this state, do not greet me, because if you do, I will not respond.” (Reported by Ibn Maajah Hadith 352)
* The majority of scholars say that it is makrooh (disliked) to speak in the bathroom with no valid reason.
Narrated Abu Huraira:
That once he was in the company of the Prophet (ﷺ) carrying a water pot for his ablution and for cleaning his private parts. While he was following him carrying it (i.e. the pot), the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Who is this?" He said, "I am Abu Huraira." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Bring me stones in order to clean my private parts, and do not bring any bones or animal dung." (Sahih al-Bukhari 3860)
(11) Refer to point (2)
(12) "When the Prophet would exit the toilet he would say: 'Ghufranak (I seek Your forgiveness).'" (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 7)
