The Story of Christian Emperor Heraclius and Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
After the Prophet ﷺ began spreading Islam(submission to the will of God), he sent letters to rulers around the world inviting them to embrace the faith. One such letter was addressed to Heraclius, which read:
“In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. From Muhammad, the servant of God and His Messenger, to Heraclius, the ruler of the Romans. Peace be upon those who follow the guidance. I invite you to Islam(submission to the will of God). Submit to Islam and you will be safe. Accept Islam, and Allah(God) will reward you twice. But if you turn away, you will bear the sin of your subjects.”
Heraclius received the letter while in Jerusalem. Intrigued, he sought to learn more about Muhammad ﷺ and his message. He ordered his men to find any Arabs in his territory who might know about this prophet. They brought forward Abu Sufyan, a leader of the Quraysh and, at that time, an opponent of Islam.
In a fascinating exchange, Heraclius asked Abu Sufyan a series of questions about Muhammad ﷺ: his lineage, character, message, and followers. Despite his enmity, Abu Sufyan answered truthfully, admitting that Muhammad ﷺ was honest, trustworthy, and increasingly followed by people from all walks of life.
After hearing this, Heraclius declared:
“If what you say is true, then this man will soon rule the lands under my feet. I knew a prophet was to come, but I did not expect him to be from among you. If I were with him, I would wash his feet.”
Though Heraclius recognized the truth of the Prophet’s message and expressed his respect, he ultimately did not publicly embrace Islam, likely due to the political and societal pressures of his time.
This story stands as a powerful testament to the undeniable character and mission of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, whose message resonated even with those in positions of great power and influence.
