BUILDING GRAVES AND DECORATING THEM IS A PRACTICE OF THE DEVIANT SHI’A SECT

Shia is not Islam - IIN

▶️ BUILDING GRAVES AND DECORATING THEM IS A PRACTICE OF THE DEVIANT SHI’A SECT—MAY ALLAH CURSE THEM—AND THEN FOLLOWED BY THE SUFIS
The Shi’a and Sufis are the groups most fond of glorifying graves and beautifying their appearance by raising them, tiling them, adding decorations such as flowers, lights, and even canopies.
And now, most of the Muslims have begun to build graves in a grand manner—raising them, tiling them, inscribing gravestones, and so on.
Jabir bin ‘Abdillah (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) said:
نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يُجَصَّصَ الْقَبْرُ وَأَنْ يُقْعَدَ عَلَيْهِ وَأَنْ يُبْنَى عَلَيْهِ (رواه مسلم).
“The Messenger of Allah (shallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) forbade plastering the grave, sitting on it, and building over it.” (Narrated by Muslim).
And Jabir bin ‘Abdillah (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) said:
نَهَى النَّبِىُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَنْ تُجَصَّصَ الْقُبُورُ وَأَنْ يُكْتَبَ عَلَيْهَا وَأَنْ يُبْنَى عَلَيْهَا وَأَنْ تُوطَأَ
“Indeed, the Prophet (shallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) forbade plastering graves, writing on them, building over them, sitting on them, and walking over them.” (Narrated by Ibn Majah: authentic hadith).
And Jabir bin ‘Abdillah (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) said:
أن النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أُلْحِدَ وَنُصِبَ عَلَيْهِ اللَّبِنُ نَصَبًا ، وَرُفِعَ قَبْرُهُ مِنَ الأَرْضِ نَحْوًا مِنْ شِبْرٍ.
“Indeed, a lahd grave was made for the Prophet (shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam), bricks were placed over it, and his grave was raised from the ground about a handspan.” (Narrated by Ibn Hibban: chain is hasan).
Sufyan at-Tammar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) said:
رَأَى قَبْرَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم مُسَنَّمًا. (رواه البخاري).
“I saw the grave of the Prophet (shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) shaped like a raised mound.” (Narrated by Bukhari).
Fadhalah bin ‘Ubaid (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) said:
سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَأْمُرُ بِتَسْوِيَتِهَا
“I heard the Messenger of Allah (shallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) command that they (the graves) be leveled.” (Narrated by Muslim).
From Abu al-Hayyaj al-Asadi, he said: ‘Ali bin Abi Talib (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) said to me:
ألَا أَبْعَثُكَ عَلَى مَا بَعَثَنِي عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ لَا تَدَعَ تِمْثَالًا إِلَّا طَمَسْتَهُ وَلَا قَبْرًا مُشْرِفًا إِلَّا سَوَّيْتَه
“Shall I not send you upon what the Messenger of Allah (shallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) sent me? Do not leave any images except that you erase them, and do not leave any raised grave except that you level it.” (Narrated by Muslim).
Below are the statements of the scholars regarding raising graves, building over them, and similar matters.
Imam ash-Shafi’i (rahimahullah) said:
وأحب أن لا يبنى ولا يجصص فإن ذلك يشبه الزينة والخيلاء وليس الموت موضع واحد منهما ولم أر قبور المهاجرين والانصار مجصصة ...... وقد رأيت من الولاة من يهدم بمكة ما يبنى فيها فلم أر الفقهاء يعيبون ذلك
“I prefer that graves are neither built upon nor plastered, because that resembles adornment and arrogance, and death is not a place for either of them. I have not seen the graves of the Muhajirin and Ansar plastered… And I have seen some rulers demolish what was built over graves in Makkah, and I did not see the scholars of fiqh condemning that.” (Al-Umm).
And Imam ash-Shafi’i (rahimahullah) said:
وأكره ان يعظم مخلوق حتى يجعل قبره مسجدا مخافة الفتنة عليه وعلي من بعده من الناس
“I dislike that a created being is exalted to the point that his grave is made into a place of worship, fearing fitnah for him and for those after him.” (Al-Umm).
Imam an-Nawawi (rahimahullah), commenting on the hadith of ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), said:
فيه أن السنة أن القبر لا يرفع على الأرض رفعاً كثيراً ولا يسنم بل يرفع نحو شبر ويسطح وهذا مذهب الشافعي ومن وافقه،
“It shows that the Sunnah is that the grave should not be raised high above the ground nor shaped like a camel’s hump, but rather raised about a handspan and leveled. This is the madhhab of ash-Shafi’i and those who agree with him.” (Syarh an-Nawawi ‘ala Shahih Muslim, 3/36).
Imam ash-Shafi’i (rahimahullah) said:
“It is disliked to construct over graves, to write the name of the deceased on the gravestone or other writings, and to build over them.” (Al-Majmu’, V/266).
He also said:
“I prefer that the grave soil is not raised above others nor that soil from elsewhere is added to it. It is not permissible if additional soil makes it excessively high, but there is no problem if only a little is added. I only prefer that the grave be raised about a handspan above the ground.
I also prefer that it is not built upon nor plastered, because that resembles adornment and arrogance, and death is not a place for either of them. I did not see the graves of the Muhajirin and Ansar constructed in such a way. A narrator reported from Tawus that the Messenger of Allah (shallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) forbade building or plastering graves. I have seen some rulers in Makkah demolish such structures, and I did not see the scholars object to that.” (Al-Majmu’, V/266).
Imam an-Nawawi (rahimahullah) said:
“It is disliked to plaster graves, build over them, and write on them. If such structures are built on waqf land designated for Allah’s cause, then they must be demolished.” (Al-Muhadzdzab, I/456).
Ash-Shawkani (rahimahullah) said:
“Graves should not be raised excessively high, without distinction between the grave of a notable person and others. Apparently, raising a grave beyond what is permitted is haram. This has been clearly stated by the companions of Imam Ahmad and some companions of Imam ash-Shafi’i.” (Nayl al-Awtar, IV/131).
Ibn Hajar al-Haitami (rahimahullah) said:
“The gravest prohibited acts and causes leading to shirk are praying over graves, taking them as places of worship, and building over them. As for the opinion that such acts are merely disliked, then ‘disliked’ here must mean haram. It is impossible for the scholars to permit something for which the Prophet (shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) cursed those who do it.” (Az-Zawajir, I/195).
He also said:
“Structures built over graves must be demolished, as well as domes over them, because they are more harmful than Masjid Dirar. Building them is an act of disobedience to the Messenger of Allah (shallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), who forbade it and commanded that raised graves be leveled. Lamps placed over graves must also be removed, and it is not permissible to endow or vow lamps for such purposes.” (Az-Zawajir, I/195).
However, some people who claim to be Ahlus Sunnah actually raise graves, construct over them, decorate them, and build domes above them. They argue that the grave of the Prophet (shallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) itself has a dome.
In reality, the dome over the Prophet’s grave is not evidence. Rather, it contradicts the clear evidence of the Prophet (shallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), who forbade raising graves and commanded that they be leveled.
Imam ash-Shan’ani (rahimahullah) said in Tathir al-I’tiqadat:
“If you say that a large dome has been built over the grave of the Messenger of Allah (shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) with great expense, then I say this is great ignorance of reality. That dome was not built by him, nor by the Companions, nor the Tabi‘in, nor the followers of the Tabi‘in, nor the scholars of the Ummah. Rather, it was built by one of the later kings of Egypt, Qalawun as-Salihi, known as al-Mansur, in the year 678 AH.”
It is mentioned in Tahqiq an-Nushrah bi Talkhis Ma‘alim Dar al-Hijrah:
“This is a matter of government policy and has nothing to do with religious evidence.”
