Public Swimming Pools, Disease, and Modern Health Risks
Did you know that many people in the West have become concerned about the health risks associated with public swimming pools?
Did you know that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned about contaminating stagnant water over 1,400 years ago?
How?
Let us look at what modern experts say.
CNN Reports:
Indoor swimming pools can be more dangerous because chemicals from the water can build up in the air, especially when the pool area is poorly ventilated. Splashing and swimming release these chemicals into the air, where nearby people can breathe them in.
Some of these chemicals are formed when chlorine mixes with sweat, urine, or dirt, and studies suggest they may increase the risk of diseases such as bladder and colorectal cancer.
Experts also stress the importance of proper hygiene and warn people not to urinate or defecate in pools, because doing so worsens the harmful chemical reactions and affects everyone using the pool.
CNN even quoted an expert saying:
“If you don’t pee or poop in the pool, that’s cool too.”

The Islamic Scientific Miracle
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
> “None amongst you should urinate in standing water and then wash in it.”
— Sahih Muslim 282a
Another narration states:
“You should not pass urine in stagnant water which is not flowing and then wash in it.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari 239

Shaykh al-Zindani mentioned that bilharzia (schistosomiasis) became widespread in some regions due to people contaminating lakes and stagnant water with urine, despite the prophetic warning against it.
According to the World Health Organization:
“Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease spread when infected people urinate or defecate in freshwater sources such as lakes and rivers.”
The WHO further explains that transmission occurs when parasite eggs enter freshwater through human waste.
