Noor Tagouri America’s First Hijabi News Anchor
Noor Tagour, 21 year old, Arab-American Muslim in her Ted Talk; talks about her path to become the first Hijabi News Anchor in America.
The 21 year old, lets people in on her passion, dreams, and struggles to become America’s first hijabi news anchor.
Her struggle started young, when growing up in a small village in USA. As there weren’t many Muslim’s around, she knew she was different. Much like a lot of us, she did not want to accept it. Soon she hit a patch of identity crisis, a phenomena almost everyone deals with in their lifetime. She did not want people asking about her religion, culture, or background.
Every day after school Noor and her mother watched The Oprah Winfrey Show. And it was Oprah that made Noor want to be a reporter. Oprah became her role model, as she encouraged them to talk about their stories and share them without being ashamed. Luckily for Noor, both her parents were supportive of her idea to become a reporter. They took her to writing camps, and her dad spent time with her to explain news to her. They even took her to meet with journalists she admired.

Her family moved to Washington, DC when she was dealing with her identity crisis. So she decided to wear a hijab, as she accepted who she was and was proud of it. During her journey she found out that there has never been a hijabi reporter on any commercial television, and she decided to change it.

When she was in College she fell in love with spoken poetry. A few days after her 18th birthday, she had a public performance. The night before she prayed, and asked Allah to grant her a job or internship that will take her a step closer to her dream. The next day after her performance Justine Love, Director of Community and Public Affairs on CBS Radio, offered her an internship at the CBS Radio. That internship changed Noor’s life.
One day Noor posted a picture of her sitting on the ABC desk, and the picture was captioned “This is what my dream looks like”. The picture went viral all over the world, and people started sharing their dreams.
Today, Noor Tagouri is America’s first hijabi journalist on television. As we all know that the mainstream media portrays Muslims under a negative light. Noor believes it is her job to explain her religion, as this is important to her.
