Need help making a decision?
New job? Marriage? Traveling? Career path? Buying a car, house? College major?
Whichever course of action or difficult decision you need to make, Allah SWT is the only One who truly knows what is best for us. For this reason, we turn to Him and consult Him to guide us to the best path.
How to perform Salat al Istikhara (decision making prayer)
*Dua can also be made after last tashahud and before the tasleem
Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah:
The Prophet (ﷺ) used to teach us the way of doing Istikhara (Istikhara means to ask Allah to guide one to the right sort of action concerning any job or a deed), in all matters as he taught us the Surahs of the Qur'an. He said, "If anyone of you thinks of doing any job he should offer a two rak`at prayer other than the compulsory ones and say (after the prayer): --
Allahumma inni Astakhiruka Bi Ilmika Wa Astaqdiruka Biqudratika Wa As'aluka Min Fadlikal-Azim, Fa Innaka Taqdiru Walā Aqdiru Wa Ta'lamu Wala A'lamu Wa Anta Allamul Ghuyab. Allahumma in Kunta Ta'lamu Anna Hadhal Amra (Mention The Thing Here) Khayrun Li Fi Dini Wa Ma-Ashi Wa Aqibati Amri Faqdir-Hu Li Wa Yassir-Hu Li Thumma Barik Li Fihi Wa In Kunta Ta'lamu Anna Hadhal Amra Sharun Li Fi Dini Wa Maashi Wa Aqibati Amri Fasrifhu Anni Wasrifni Anhu Waqdir Liyal-Khayra Haythu Kana Thumma Ardini Bih
O Allah, I consult You as You are All-Knowing and I appeal to You to give me power as You are Omnipotent, I ask You for Your great favor, for You have power and I do not, and You know all of the hidden matters and I do not. O Allah! If you know that this matter (mention the thing here) is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and for my life in the Hereafter, then make it (easy) for me. And if you know that this matter is not good for me in my religion, my livelihood and my life in the Hereafter, then keep it away from me and take me away from it and choose what is good for me wherever it is and please me with it.
Note: When praying Istikhara, one must not have his mind already set at a certain decision. He can first take the means of seeking guidance and advice from others then pray Istikhara and ask Allah whether this affair is good for him or not.
One should then proceed in this regards and if the path is hindered by obstacles and difficult to continue, this is a sign that it is not to your best interest. If the path is easy and everything is falling into place smoothly, then this is a great indicator that this decision will be to your best interest
Fear Allaah in the Unseen and do not publicize your bad deeds:
I heard Allaah’s Messenger ﷺ saying: ❝All the sins of my followers will be forgiven except those of the Mujaahireen (those who commit a sin openly or disclose their sins to the people). An example of such disclosure is that a person commits a sin at night and though Allaah screens it from the public, then he comes in the morning, and says: “O so-and-so, I did such-and-such (evil) deed yesterday”, though he spent his night screened by his Lord (none knowing about his sin) and in the morning he removes Allaah’s screen from himself.❞
Thereafter, seek Allaah’s help in becoming righteous and an obedient slave of Allaah, and do righteous deeds which will help in effacing the bad deeds, as Allaah تعالى said:
{And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night [i.e., the five compulsory Salaah]. Indeed, good deeds remove with evil deeds. That is a reminder for those who are mindful (and accept the advice).}
And supplicate to Allaah, as the Prophet ﷺ had taught:
Allaahumma innee as-aluka khashyataka fil-ghaibi wash-shahaadah
❝O Allaah, cause me to fear You in secret and in public❞
❝The hardest of things to do are three:
Know that Allaah تعالى is al-`Adheem (Most Great) and al-Kareem (Most Generous). So, while in seclusion if you leave off doing something bad – though you had the ability to do it – but you left it for the sake of Allaah and out of the fear of His punishment, Allaah تعالى will raise your status and honor you, because you feared Allaah in the unseen (i.e., in this world before meeting Him in the Hereafter), and fearing Allaah in the unseen is a great achievement and high rank which very few achieve. And Allaah has promised a great reward for those who fear Him in the unseen, as Allaah تعالى said:
{And Paradise will be brought near to the Muttaqoon (pious). (It will be said): “This is what you were promised, - (it is) for those oft-returning (to Allaah) in sincere repentance, and those who preserve their covenant with Allaah (by obeying Him in all what He has ordered, and worship none but Allaah Alone). Those who feared the Most Beneficent (Allaah) in the Ghaib (unseen): (i.e., in this worldly life before seeing and meeting Him), and brought a heart turned in repentance (free from Shirk). Enter it (the Jannah) in peace. This is the Day of Eternity (and no death). They will have whatever they wish therein, and We have more (for them, i.e., a glance at the All-Mighty, All-Majestic).”}
We ask Allaah تعالى to make us among His righteous servants – who Fear Him openly and secretly, and in gatherings and in seclusions
