The Christian doctrine of original sin and atonement produces irreconcilable contradictions. 𝐎𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝, it asserts that original sin is a universal predicament from which humanity cannot escape except through the incarnation, crucifixion, and shedding of blood.
𝐎𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝, it asserts that Mary was liberated from this sin before the crucifixion, not through faith in the event of redemption or participation in it, but through a special exception that preceded it. If this was possible for Mary, then the claim that the cross was the only path and an absolute necessity for salvation is undermined.
If it is argued that Mary was preserved because of the future merits of Christ’s atoning sacrifice, another contradiction arises: how can the cross be a necessary condition for salvation while its effects are applied to an individual before it occurred?
𝐅𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞, if God was able to apply the effects of atonement before the crucifixion to one individual, why was the same effect not applied to all humanity without the need for suffering and crucifixion?
𝐀 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐦𝐚 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐬: if Mary inherited original sin, how was it not transmitted to Christ, who was born from her? If it did not transfer because she was specially exempted, then it follows that the transmission of original sin is not an inevitable law, but rather something that can be removed through direct divine will. This would undermine the necessity of atonement as the required solution.
𝐓𝐡𝐮𝐬, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:
If sin can only be removed through crucifixion, then Mary’s exemption undermines this necessity; but if sin can be removed without crucifixion, then the crucifixion is no longer necessary for salvation. In either case, the central claim that the incarnation and atonement are indispensable requirements for salvation is significantly challenged.
