Sometimes the Prophet ﷺ would compress an ocean of meaning into a few words. Here he takes the whole of the religion and sums it up in one: "The religion is nasiha." (Muslim)

Nasiha is most often translated as sincere advice or counsel and that is its heart: wanting genuine good for someone and offering it to them honestly, with care rather than harshness. It is a rich, comprehensive word, so it also carries sincerity, loyalty and goodwill and it is the opposite of deceiving people, talking about them behind their backs or quietly wishing they would fail.

That is why, when the Companions asked, "To whom?", the Prophet ﷺ gave a full circle: nasiha to Allah, to His Book, to His Messenger ﷺ, to the leaders of the Muslims and to the general body of the Muslims. This is also why it cannot be reduced to "giving advice" alone: toward Allah it means sincere devotion and obedience, toward His Book believing in it and living by it and toward His Messenger ﷺ following and honoring him. Toward people, both leaders and public, it is exactly what we mean by sincere advice: wanting for them what you want for yourself, counselling them honestly and treating them with goodwill.

Sit with that last part, because it is where most of us are tested. It is easy to feel devout in worship and forget that faith is also measured in how we treat one another: the sincere advice offered gently instead of gossip, the honesty that does not cut corners, the quiet habit of wanting good for people even when they are not in the room.

So the religion is not only a private matter between you and Allah; it is also carried in your goodwill toward everyone He has placed around you. May Allah make us true well-wishers, to Him, to His Book, to His Messenger ﷺ and to all of His creation. Ameen.
