Rather, the faith founded and practiced by the Christ and followed by the original followers of the Christ was named THE WAY (Greek: τῆς Ὁδοῦ ,pronounced 'tēs Hodou') — See Acts 9:2, Acts 18: 26, Acts 19: 9, Acts 19: 23, Acts 22:4, Acts 24:14, Acts 24: 22.
"about that —"the" way —So the new religion seemed then to be designated (Act 9:2; 22:4; 24:14)." (Source: https://biblehub.com/commentaries/jfb/acts/19.htm)
In the same vein, the Christ never named the original believers as "Christians" after his title "Christ". Rather, the first believers originally knew themselves as "believers" (23 times such as in Acts 1:15; 2:44; 4:32; 10:45; 15:5; 18:27, 19:18 etc), Or "disciples" (27 times such as in Acts 6:1, 2, 7; 9:1; 19, 25-26 etc), Or "the saints" (4 times in the saints Acts 9:13, 32, 41; and Acts 26:10).
Unbelieving Jews in the time named the believers as "Nazarenes" (Acts 24:5) Or "Galileans" (Acts 2:7). But the believers never named or called themselves by either of these names.
Also, the name "Christians" (Greek Χριστιανούς, pronounced 'Christianous') was first applied to "the believers" by pagans at Antioch (Acts 11:26). The second use of this name was by the pagan King Agrippa (Acts 26:28). The third and final use of the name "Christian" was used in a negative sense — only for one suffered at the hands of unbelievers as "Christian" (1 Peter 4:16).
"This name originated not within, but without, the Church; not with their Jewish enemies, by whom they were styled "Nazarenes" (Ac 24:5), but with the heathen in Antioch, and (as the form of the word shows) with the Romans, not the Greeks there [Olshausen]. It was not at first used in a good sense (as Ac 26:28; 1 Pe 4:16 show), ." (Source: Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary, on Acts 11:26).
CONCLUSION
This part of the series proved that the name "Christianity" (though derived from the title "Christ") is NOT the biblical name of the faith founded and practised by Christ and believed and practiced by the first Christians. Rather, the biblical name of the faith of Jesus and the original believers is "The Way".
Its also proved that the appellation "Christian" (though derived from the title "Christ") is not the biblical name of the original followers for the Christ. Rather, the biblical name for those who follow the Christ was "believers" or "brethren" or "saints"!
The next part of the series would prove that Jesus, as well the original Christians, was a Torah-observant Temple-going Jew not a Torah-abolishing Church-going Christian.
