Christian missionaries claim Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) being pressed by Angel Gabriel in his first interaction proves false prophethood because a true prophet would not be afraid of God’s Angel and also why would the Angel press a prophet like that!
Response:
Being afraid during the first encounter with the unseen/angel/God is actually a very human and prophetic reaction, not necessarily evidence of false prophethood.
Many prophets even in the Bible were terrified when encountering angels or divine manifestations.
Examples include:
• Book of Daniel: Prophet Daniel collapses in fear:
“No strength remained in me…” (Daniel 10:8–9)
• Gospel of Luke: Prophet Zachariah was “troubled, and fear fell upon him” when he saw the angel (Luke 1:12)
• Mary: She too was also disturbed heavily by the angelic appearance (Luke 1:29)
• Shepherds: The shepherds at Jesus’ birth were “sore afraid” when angels appeared (Luke 2:9)
• John in Book of Revelation: John falls “as dead” before the heavenly vision (Revelation 1:17)
So fear of an angelic encounter is not unusual in prophetic experiences.
Counter Question: A comparative question can also be raised:
• Jacob wrestled all night and had his hip dislocated in Book of Genesis 32:25
• Daniel fainted. Daniel 10:9
• Ezekiel fell on his face. Ezekiel 1:28
• John collapsed “as dead.” Rev (1:17)
So physical and emotional overwhelm during divine encounters is already part of Biblical prophetic tradition.
