The seahorse: The only species in which the male becomes Pregnant
The male of this species is distinguished by the fact that he possesses a sac in which the eggs laid by the female are placed. The female lays the eggs inside the male’s sac, and he takes care of the eggs and supplies them with nourishment by means of a plasma-like liquid that he secretes inside the sac. This supplying of nourishment continues until the young ones are fully grown.
The male partner remains in this state for a period between ten and forty-two days. The female checks on the male every morning and checking on the egg helps her to know when the time of birth is approaching, so she can prepare to lay more eggs.
