"SEA GOATS" EASTING EXTREME POLLUTION IN DEEP OCEANS!
MOON SURFACE? — WHAT DO WE KNOW? Scientists know more about other planets, than our own oceans.
BIGGER — DEEPER — MORE POLLUTED . .
Higher than Mount Everest — Bigger than Texas — Polluted worse than anywhere else on earth —
That’s the MARIANA TRENCH in Pacific Ocean.
Our deepest ocean has MORE POLLUTION, filth and garbage than anywhere above sea-level on earth!
WAIT — It’s actually 50 TIMES MORE POLLUTED — Than the worst than anywhere else on earth.
The most polluted river on earth is China’s Liaohe River. But the "SEA GOATS (shrimp-like crustaceans) of Mariana Trench have over 50 times as much pollution concentrations as crabs found from this infamous river of filth.
We ask, “How? Why?” For answers to these and more questions, we turn to experts who have taken their research to the very depths of the deepest parts of oceans.
Researchers set traps to capture “sea goats”* (hirondellea giga) tiny amphipods, crustaceans (like crabs, shrimp, lobsters) living and scavenging in these deep-sea trenches, to know more about pollutants in this deepest part of the earth.
Scientists were amazed to find amphipods' fatty tissues for levels of POPS (Persistent Organic Pollutants), known to disrupt hormones in living creatures.
POPs enter our environment from industrial discharges, leakage from landfills, incomplete incineration and all kinds of industrial waste disposals, according to researchers findings.
Two POPs of great concern are PCBs (PolyChlorinated Biphenyls used as dielectric fluid) and PBDEs (PolyBrominated Diphenyl Ethers), used as flame retardants.
Researchers explain, it’s likely Mariana PCBs come from nearby North Pacific Subtropical Gyre — (commonly called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch).
Millions of tons from plastic and garbage fragments are getting trapped in a vortex between the ocean currents — according to recent reports.
Results prove human caused contamination is found across the far reaches of the Earth, and especially in the Mariana Trench.
"The salient finding was that PCBs and PBDEs were present in all samples across all species at all depths in both trenches," wrote researchers in their study.
The amphipods in the Mariana Trench have higher PCB levels than those amphipods from the Kermadec Trench.
“The findings are disturbing,” said Katherine Dafforn, the senior research associate in the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of New South Wales in Australia.
And Dafforn wrote, “This is significant since the Hadal trenches are many miles away from any industrial source . .” and that it, “suggests that the delivery of these pollutants occurs ever long distances despite regulation since the 1970s."
____________
PBDEs (Polybrominated diphenyl ethers) are flame-retardant chemicals added to plastics and foam products to make them difficult to burn.
Types of PBDEs include some having only a few bromine atoms attached, while others have as many as 10 bromine attached to every central molecule.
PBDEs can leave the products that contain them and enter the environment.
