Have you ever made an angry face at your toddler, just to see what they would do?

Have you ever made an angry face at your toddler, just to see what they would do? Their lip trembled, their eyes welled up and you quickly said you were only joking. That small moment reveals something important. Children are extraordinarily sensitive to how we look at them, how we speak to them and what we call them. Most of us would never think of ourselves as harsh parents, yet the Quran names forms of emotional harm so subtle we may be causing them every day without realizing it.
- The first is our facial expressions. Allah corrected the Prophet ﷺ for frowning in the presence of a man who could not even see it (80:1-2). If Allah held His Messenger to that standard in front of someone who was blind, imagine how much our expressions register with children, who read our faces before they understand our words.
- The second is mimicking a child's emotions. Imitating a crying child, exaggerating the sound or pulling faces may feel like harmless fun, but the Quran condemns exactly this kind of mockery of the vulnerable (83:29-32).
- The third is insults disguised as discipline. Surah Al-Hujurat instructs believers not to mock, insult or label one another (49:11) and those words apply with even greater force inside the home. “What is wrong with you?” and “Why can't you do anything right?” do not correct behavior. They attack a child's sense of self.
- The fourth is nicknames. If a child dislikes a name, using it is a small, repeated disrespect that siblings quickly copy. A simple rule helps: use only names you would be glad to hear their classmates and one day their spouse use.
- The fifth is responding to every mistake with a lecture. Young children process consequences and patterns, not speeches. Take the item back, return it and calmly ask, “How do you ask properly?” Consistency changes behavior far more than volume ever will.
The harm we do with words and expressions is rarely intentional. The Quran does not shame us for it. It names these tendencies clearly so we can recognize them and choose differently. The standard is not perfection. It is awareness, restraint and the willingness to keep trying.
