Most of our du’aa

1ي
Most of our du’aa is about beginnings. The new job, the marriage, the move, the course we are about to start. We ask Allah to open the door and bless what waits behind it, which is right and good. What we almost never ask about is how we will leave.
Allah taught the Prophet ﷺ a du’aa with both halves inside it: “My Lord, let me enter with truthfulness and let me leave with truthfulness and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority.” (17:80) It was given around the hijrah, at a moment defined by both motions at once. Makkah was being left. Madinah was being entered. Neither could be done carelessly.
Once you notice the pattern, you see how much of a life is made of entrances and exits. You enter a job, a city, a friendship, a marriage, a role in the masjid, a stage of parenting, a season of your own life. Then, eventually, you leave most of them. We prepare intensely for the first half and improvise the second, which is why so many of our exits are remembered badly. A resignation handled poorly. A friendship allowed to dissolve rather than be closed with respect. A role we held onto too long or dropped too suddenly, leaving people to clear up behind us.
The word at the center of the du’aa is sidq, truthfulness. It is not asking merely for an easy entrance and a smooth exit. It is asking for both to be sound and honest all the way through: that you go in for the right reason rather than the flattering one and that you come out with your integrity intact and nothing behind you that you would be ashamed to have Allah replay.
The third part is the one we tend to skip. A supporting authority from Him, some strength that is not generated by you. Truthfulness in transitions is expensive. Leaving well often costs more than staying and entering honestly can mean giving up an advantage you could have taken. That kind of integrity needs backing and this du’aa teaches us to ask for the backing along with the character.
So whatever you are stepping into this month and whatever you are quietly stepping out of, ask Him for both. May Allah make our entrances truthful, our exits truthful and support us with strength from Himself. Ameen.
