BUT HOW OLD WAS REBECCA WHEN SHE MARRIED ISAAC ?
In the Midrash… the traditional counting cited by Rashi, the age of Isaac was 37 years, at the time of the Binding sacrifice of Isaac [Genesis 22:20-23], and news of Rebecca's birth [Genesis 22:20-23] reached Abraham immediately after that event.[6] Isaac was forty years [Genesis 25:20] old when he married Rebecca,[7] making Rebecca 3 years old at the time of her marriage.
Let us view the numerous Christian saints who married young girls…(and it goes without saying…that these marriages were with the consent of the Church.)
1. Saint Augustine (354-439 A.D) who is credited with having formulated Christian theology, betrothed himself to a 10 year old girl, when he was 31 years.
2. Saint Agnes: known as the patron saint of chastity -fielded marriage proposals when she was less than 12 years.
3. Saint Hedwig of Andechs was the patron saint of orphans. She married Henry I of Silesia at the age of 12.
4. Margaret-Maria of Hungary married Isaac II Angelus, at the age of 9.
5. King Richard II, at the age of 30 married the French princess Isabella, who was only 7 years.
6. Girolamo Riario, Lord of Imola, married the 9 year old Caterina Sforza.
7. King Haakon VI of Norway married the 10 year old Queen Margaret.
8. Count Agness of Essex was betrothed at the age of 3 years and married at the age of 12, to a man who was almost fifty years of age.
9. Prince Edward of Wales married the French king’s daughter, Isabella, who was 7 years old.
10. Romanos II married Bertha (renamed Eudokia), the daughter of the King of Italy, when she was 4 years old!
11. Stephen Milutin, the Kral of Serbia, married Simonis, the daughter of Emperor Andronikos II, when she was 5 years old. At the time of the marriage, Stephen Milutin was 50 years old.
12. Edward I married the 9 year old Eleanor of Castile.
13. Richard of Shrewsbury, King Edward IV’s son, married the 5 year old Anne Mowbray of Norfolk
14. Mary Stewart married Henry VIII, when she was only 6 yrs.
There would be no child marriage… without the church consent!!
