Who told you to love your enemies?
Jesus criticises the Jews for not putting their disobedient children to death according to Old Testament law. Mark 7:9–13 states: “Whoever curses father or mother shall die” (Mark 7:10, NAB).
Jesus is criticised by the Pharisees for not washing his hands before eating. He defends himself by reproaching them for not executing disobedient children according to the commandment: “He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death” (Matthew 15:4–7).
Jesus is depicted as prescribing a punishment even more severe than that of God concerning adultery. God declared the act of adultery punishable by death, while Jesus states that looking with lust amounts to the same act, and that one should gouge out one’s eye—better to lose a part than the whole. Under Jesus’ teaching, the punishment is an eternity in Hell (Matthew 5:27).
