The idea that everything contained in the Bible constitutes literal historical fact can no longer be maintained among academic scholars.

Dr Stephen Patterson, Atkinson Professor of Religious and Ethical Studies at Willamette University, states that this idea collapsed in light of what modern studies in history, geography, and science have revealed about the nature and functioning of the world.

He further explains that the Gospel texts themselves belong to an ancient and inaccurate worldview that cannot be imposed upon modern knowledge. To what extent can the claim of literal historicity still be maintained after everything uncovered by modern research?
