Have you ever wondered how an egg forms inside a hen’s body?

Stages of egg formation:

1. Ovary (release of the yolk):

There are thousands of small ova in the ovary. When one matures, the ovary releases it.

This nutrient-rich yolk forms the core of the egg and is known as the yolk.

2. Oviduct:

Infundibulum:

It catches the yolk and the yolk stays there for about 15 minutes. This is where fertilization may occur if sperm is present.

Magnum:

Layers of egg white (albumen) are added around the yolk. This process takes several hours.

Isthmus:

Here, the thin inner and outer shell membranes form around the egg white.

Uterus (Shell Gland):

The shell—mainly made of calcium carbonate—is added, along with the outer shell membranes.

This stage takes the longest time in egg formation, about 20 hours.

3. Cuticle and laying:

The final part of the oviduct secretes a transparent layer called the cuticle, which coats the shell and protects it from bacteria.

The fully formed egg then leaves the hen through the vagina. The whole process takes about 24–26 hours, which explains why a hen cannot lay two eggs in one day.

Egg formation takes more than 24 hours, so a hen cannot lay two eggs on the same day.

Nutrition:

Proper nutrition is essential to provide calcium and other nutrients needed for a healthy egg.
