Kodokushi: A Human Tragedy That Reveals the Mercy of IslamThe phenomenon of Kodokushi in Japan is one of the most painful human phenomena in modern societies. It means "lonely death" where people, mostly the elderly, pass away inside their homes without anyone noticing their absence. Their death is only discovered days or even weeks later.
According to official data released by the Japan National Police Agency for 2024, 76,020 people were found dead in their homes after living alone. 76.4% of them were aged 65 or older. These numbers reflect a disturbing reality caused by rapid aging, the breakdown of family ties, and children being preoccupied with their own lives far from their parents until the elderly grow old alone and die forgotten.
One of the stories that shook the human conscience: a 91-year-old paralyzed man who lived with his wife in Osaka. The wife passed away first. Then, because he was completely unable to move, he was left alone until he died of hunger. Their situation was only discovered weeks later when a smell spread through the building, while their son lived in a distant city with no contact with his parents.
These tragedies are not just numbers or passing stories. They are a stark testimony to what societies become when values are marginalized and morals are abandoned.
Here the wisdom of Allah Almighty becomes clear in a legislation that preserves human dignity and protects society from this silent collapse. He made maintaining family ties an obligation, honoring parents an act of worship, and caring for the elderly a duty not a choice.
Allah warns against the consequences of severing ties:
{Then would you perhaps, if you turned away, cause corruption on earth and sever your ties of kinship? Those are the ones whom Allah has cursed, so He made them deaf and blinded their vision.}
[Muhammad: 22-23]Islam establishes a complete system that protects a person in both weakness and strength, in old age and youth. This comprehensiveness in legislation and care is one of the greatest reasons that lead a rational person to choose Islam as a religion a religion that brings hearts to life, strengthens bonds, and prevents a person from dying alone in silence.
