His name was William Henry Quilliam.

Born into a wealthy Methodist family, Quilliam became a respected defence lawyer. But everything changed in 1887, when a journey to Morocco sparked a profound interest in Islam.

During a storm at sea, he witnessed Muslim passengers turning calmly to prayer despite the danger around them. Their faith, serenity and trust in Allah deeply affected him.

He began studying Islam.

The more he investigated, the more convinced he became.

At just 31, he embraced Islam in Tangier and adopted the name Abdullah Quilliam.

Returning to Liverpool, he established the Liverpool Muslim Institute, which developed into a remarkable centre of Islamic life—associated with a mosque, school, orphanage, library and printing press.

Through his writings, lectures and outreach, Quilliam became one of the most prominent early advocates of Islam in Britain. His work reportedly influenced hundreds of people, including members of Britain's professional and social elite.

In 1894, Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II appointed him Sheikh-ul-Islam of the British Isles, recognizing his service to Islam and the Muslim community.

Despite later difficulties that forced him to leave Liverpool, Quilliam continued supporting Islam and Islamic causes until his death in 1932.

More than a century later, his story still carries a powerful lesson:
