Karen Armstrong — British writer — former nun — born in 1944
One of the most famous Orientalists in the world. She is not Muslim.
What did she say about Lady Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, “radiya Allahu ‘anha”?
“Aisha was a leader, a warrior, and a scholar, and she was not a naïve child. Marriage at her age was entirely normal across all cultures.”
These are not the words of a Muslim shaykh, meaning an Islamic religious scholar, “shaykh”. These are the words of a former nun who studied the history of religions for 40 years at the Vatican and Oxford.
𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐬𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬?
𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲:
𝟏. 𝐈𝐧 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐢𝐭𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟, 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐥𝐞 𝐀𝐠𝐞𝐬, the age of marriage was 7–12 years, and this remained the legal age in Britain until the nineteenth century.
𝟐. 𝐀𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐚 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝. 𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫, she became one of the most prominent women of the first Muslim generation and one of its foremost authorities in religious knowledge.
As the Mother of the Believers, “Umm al-Mu’minin”, she was a major transmitter of the Prophetic tradition, “Hadith”, and an eminent jurist whose legal opinions, “fatawa”, were sought by the Companions of the Prophet, “Sahabah”, and later generations.
She taught numerous students and preserved extensive knowledge concerning the Prophet’s words, actions, worship, family life, and legal practice. She was also recognised for her knowledge of Qur’anic interpretation, Islamic jurisprudence, genealogy, poetry, and aspects of medicine.
She participated prominently in the political affairs of the early Muslim community, including the events associated with the Battle of the Camel. She narrated 2,210 Prophetic reports and became one of the most important scholarly authorities of the first Muslim generation, with her jurisprudential opinions and transmitted knowledge continuing to be studied to this day.
𝟑. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐭, 𝐦𝐚𝐲 𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐡’𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐛𝐞 𝐮𝐩𝐨𝐧 𝐡𝐢𝐦, “salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam”, from Quraysh, who fought him and accused him of sorcery and lying, never once accused him of marrying a child, because this was considered normal throughout the world at that time.
The allegation does not arise from history. Rather, the allegation arises from judging events that occurred 1,400 years ago according to today’s standards.
Allah, the Exalted, says:
“Nor does he speak of his own whims.” (The Qur’an, 53:3)
