There are two kinds of people in almost any audience and you are quietly one of them. Some people are moved by how something is said. Others only care what is said.
The first group lives on style. Give them a speaker with a powerful voice, good energy and a bit of emotion and they are gripped and they will happily absorb whatever content rides along with it. You have seen the reaction. That talk was incredible, he was yelling, it gave me chills. Ask them what he actually said and they go quiet. The second group lives on substance. They will sit through the driest, most monotone seminar imaginable, taking careful notes, completely unbothered by how it sounds, as long as the content is real. Put the two in the same room and the style person is half asleep while the substance person is asking for the reading list. They are almost two different species.
Now look at how this verse describes the Quran. It uses two words right next to each other. The first is balagh, the power of a message to reach all the way through you, past your boredom and your defenses, into the heart. The second is risalat, the messages themselves, the actual substance and content. Effective delivery and real depth, named together.
The remarkable thing is that the Quran compromised on neither one. That is why you can meet someone who recites it so beautifully that a whole room weeps and yet who has never sat down to study what a single line of it means. You can also meet someone who has spent years dissecting its grammar and its variant readings and yet feels almost nothing when they hear it. Each of them has taken hold of only one half.
The Quran was built to move the entire person at once, the heart through its beauty and the mind through its meaning. When it is received the way it was meant to be, the whole being is shaken. So do not settle for the half you happen to be drawn to. Let it reach your heart and your mind together.
